The Gettysburg Address was delivered in 1863. That was a long time ago! Some of the language does not sound like the way we talk today. Use the links below, and page 458 of the text, to help you write how you think the Gettysburg Address would sound if it were given today.
In other words, I want to hear you give the Gettysburg Address in your own words. What does it mean? What message was Abraham Lincoln giving? This was a powerful speech, and your interpretation should be too.

I think the speech means that no person should be slaved. Also that every person should created equal. They do together and it's a graer fitting. The government can not perish from the earth to us.
the websites have helped me understand the concept better
I think abe meant that the gettysburg address is that to honer the people who fought in the battle with great prospearity and respect for the war...
I think the address means is that the nation that was made shall not be fighting. And for the brave men who have struggled threw the civil war. And this shall not be happening. For so on what I mostly think it means is that when the constitution was made it should have not been disobeyed.
I think the address means all men should be equal no matter what color they are. In my own words it means all men should be equal no matter what. African Americans have never done anything for you to hurt them. All people should respect the color of other people. I am not trying to tell people to respect others peoples colors because that is thier opinion if they only like thier color but people should respect other peoples colors. It is not thier falt that they are a differant color. That is what it means to me.
Abe meant- 1.the fathers (makers) of our nation made our nation on the thought that all men (and weomen)are created equal.
2. now we're having a terrable war that would test weither any and every country that it happens to,could take it.
3.we are here on a battle feild of this terrable war we are here to give a portion of this feild as a grave sight.
4.we should honer theese men by "keeping our eyes on the prize. In other words we should belive in what they died beliving in- to be one nation as a whole and we should get rid of slavery.
we should keep our "eyes on the prize" so that our country will be united!
The Gettysburg Address means that it was the turning point of the Civil War. What president Lincoln was saying was to stop slavery and to have all 50 states to stay united. Also for war to end.
GettysBurg Address It means that no man or woman should be treded diffrent from anyone eles. That they shouldn't have fought. They made a bloody war and they didn't have to.Everyone who died fought for a reason a good reason or a bad reason but they fought for a reason. That is what I think the GettysBirg Address is people fighting people dieing but it was for something they belived in.
The Gettysburg Address in my own words:
87 years ago, our nation was introduced to the idea of freedom and people being treated equal. We are now going into a war we call, The Civil War to see if our leaders ideals can survive in our nation. We are all gathered here to honor the brave soliders who gave us their life in hope to win this war. The most respectfuk and formal way to honor these soliders is to stay consistant to our ideals. We now promise that we will uphold freedom so our democrecy will last for a very very long time.
Mr.Lincoln left this speach because he whated no more slaves to be scared and upset. He whated the war to be over and done with. He felt sorry for the people that was in war. He said they shouldn't die in vain. I think that means somthing to everyone. I agree. They shouldn't have. The war was a terrable place to be at and look at. from my experents. They also took there lives to take slavery away forever. I would work that hard for somthing I really whated. That's what Mr. Lincoln was saying in that wonderful speach. I bet they still have thoughs footprints on the ground. In Gettysburg,VA.
basicly it means that they are sorry for the ones who died
I think he was trying to tell us that it makes 0 sence to fight with your own country espeicaily when all were sopposed to be created equaly.
Four score 7 years ago dont know what that means
I think the 1st through 5th paragraphs are about how many people in the union died trying to free slavery and that the north wants revenge!
87 years ago our ancestors created a new nation, on this continent, shaped in Liberty, and committed to the intention that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether our nation or any nation so shaped and so committed, can endure very long. We meet on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who gave their lives in hope that this country would survive. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, we cannot. We cannot dedicate -- we cannot set apart -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have set it apart, away from our power to add or detract from this battle. The world will note very little what happened here, nor remember for very long what we say here, but it can never forget what these soldiers did here. It is for us the living, to be committed here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have so nobly advanced. It is preferred for us to be here committed to the great task remaining for us -- that from these honored dead we take increased commitment to that cause for which they gave their lives for -- that we here have high determination that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have new freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not leave the earth.
four scores seven years ago a new creation came to the world saying that all men should be treadted equaly.Nowwere itereted in a great cival war, also there should be no salvery we are standing on this great battle-field and we are preventing that we should stop slavery because people in slavery are struggling cant live dont know wat they are gping to do thorgh ther life .thats why i think people should not be vanished from earth

Abe meant that-1. The makers of ouwr nation thought that all men should be created equal.2.Now we are in a awful war agianst our selves and our country.3.We are on the battle-fieald of that war. We are hear to deaticate some of this field for a place for the people that gave there lives to the nation that might live.4.We could not deticate this ground. The men liveing and dead, the ones who struggled to stay alive, took it far aboveour power.5.We are honoring the dead, the ones who gave there life to us. The new nation, under god, should have freedom-and the govermant of the people should not die from the earth.
eighty seven years ago are founders brought efort on this continenty a new country conceived in freedom, and dedicated to the cause that all people are crated equel

I think the address means since president Licoln chose to tell that speech. The union solders who are dead. Are a terrible cost. For the unoin solders that are a live. So the cost for the solders that are dead should not be. So why would. The union shoulders be a live when they should. Thats what I think what. The Gettysburg address means to me.
The Gettysburg Address means that all men are created equal and that the United States should be united. I belive the message Abraham was trying to tell us is that all men are created equal and the seceeded states should join the Union again, in hope of having a new goverment for the people.
Great insight you guys! President Lincoln would be proud to know his words still have merit with the youth of the 21st century.
Thanks MR.ARONSON P.S. I'LL MISS YOU NEXT YEAR!!!
